Where We Teach

The Petrie School of Music at
Converse College

See clearly. Decide wisely. Act justly. This is our summons for you. It’s how we began over 100 years ago and the mission still guides us today.

The advantages of a women’s college are compelling. At Converse, it’s the norm for women to run student government, publish student newspapers, serve on committees, and speak up in class. You’ll find a sisterhood of women who have succeeded professionally and personally.

Converse also offers distinct advantages as a liberal arts college, plus a close-knit community, individual attention from professors, and great opportunities for research. In the nation’s most comprehensive independent study of student engagement, Converse exceeded the national average in every category. Our students traveled more, interacted more, discussed more, excelled more.

For more than a century, the Petrie School of Music has been a beacon for passionate musicians and a standard-bearer for artistic excellence. A founding member of the National Association of Schools of Music (way back in 1924!) the Petrie School hosts around 200 concerts every year — fully staged operas, a world-class chamber music series, symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, choirs, and dozens of student solo recitals.

No matter what your musical passion, your options abound at Petrie. Our artist faculty of specialists plus our student:teacher ratio of 7:1 ensure that your unique gifts and goals will be cultivated by professional mentors of the highest order.

Summer is the season when serious students of music, dance, and theater are free to  immerse themselves in the arts; to learn and to grow, to practice and rehearse, to observe and participate. It is a time, as well, for these students to bond with peers and professionals who share their passion and support their goals – people who “speak the same language” on every level.

At the Performing Arts Institute, we have developed the kind of program in which students can nurture their talents and grow as human beings. At PAI students will find:

• High-caliber faculty and guest artists
• An enormous number of daily contact hours with the faculty
• Excellent ensembles in which the student will perform.
• Truly high-quality program offerings

We are a community, each member supportive and inspired by the other. We invite you to meet our community and examine our program. We are proud of PAI’s performance standards and unabashedly invite comparison with other summer programs.
